Classic Meatloaf Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or Italian seasoning
  • ½ cup ketchup (plus extra for topping)

Cooking Method:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Prepare the Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, thyme, and ½ cup of ketchup. Mix until just combined; be careful not to overmix, as this can make the meatloaf tough.

  3. Shape the Meatloaf: Transfer the mixture to a lightly greased loaf pan or shape it into a free-form loaf on a lined baking sheet. If you’re using a loaf pan, press the mixture in evenly.

  4. Add Topping: Spread a thin layer of ketchup over the top of the meatloaf for added flavor and moisture.

  5. Bake: Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for about 1 hour, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).

  6. Rest and Serve: Once cooked, let the meatloaf rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the juices redistribute.
